The central urban idea relies on the privileged position of the construction site—an island surrounded by the Wilhelm Channel. Located at the point of intersection between the old town and the newer train station area, the design concept for the Experimenta Zentrum is based upon achieving the optimal transparency and radiance of the structure. The equivalence of all sides of the building and its pavilion-like character help to allow it to act as a link between the old and new towns on the opposite bank, urban references and axes are filtered and expanded in a exciting manner. The configuration of the building includes four construction volumes which each host a separate thematic world: „human“, „nature and environment“, „technology“, and „digital worlds“.
Stacked vertically at an offset and counterclockwise motion, this makes the thematic distribution of the functions of the rooms clearly readable. The orthogonal staggered arrangement of the exhibition halls creates gaps that can be perceived as dynamic, spacious room situations and that integrate the surrounding landscape from all sides into the interior spatial concept. In conjunction with the site development, a light, permeable ensemble is formed, with diverse internal and external visual relationships that constantly interact with the urban and natural environment.

As a counterpart of clear autonomy, the open structure of the building stands in equal contrast to the homogeneous existing Experimenta building.
