The basic urban design configuration of the buildings from the competition was retained. This interacts with the urban context and establishes key relationships with the “Erste Campus” and Signa’s Parkhotel. An urban square provides an appropriate vis-à-vis for the 21er Haus, while existing routes within the neighbourhood form the basis of important new urban design connections.

The geometrical modification and alignment of the buildings pays special attention to the balanced distribution of the volume of the towers with the aim of optimising views and sunlight levels for all users. By differentiating the height of the base this is able to act as an element of integration.

An ensemble with a varying external appearance was developed on the basis of the planning regulations: While linear geometries define the urban streetscape along Canettistraße and Arsenalstraße, curved lines within the plot create a more individualised image. Public and private spatial sequences are represented by variations in the landscape design.

Groups of trees provide shade throughout the external areas, ensuring a comfortable climate and protective atmosphere between the buildings. The area on top of the base that lies outside the buildings is planted and subdivided to create, for example, a playground for the entire district, a terrace for the offices and gardens for the tenants of the adjacent apartments.

The Metropolitan
Austria

The residential tower “The Metropolitan” is located immediately to the south of Vienna’s new Central Station. Due to its position on the station forecourt it also acts as the entrance building to the new “Sonnwendviertel” district, which is due for completion in 2021, and to Helmut Zilk Park.

The standalone building is positioned on a triangular plot bordered by the railway tracks to the northeast and Karl-Popper Straße to the west. The space between the tower and the next building to the south – a hotel – forms a plaza that offers residents and the public improved options for moving around the area while creating a pedestrian zone in front of the commercial spaces at ground-floor level.

The building reacts to its orientation and varying surroundings with two types of façade: The apartments that face the railway tracks to the northeast “swing out” from and animate the façade by creating bays with staggered triangular balconies that optimise the light coming from the south and reduce the frontal exposure of the windows to the railway. The richly sculpted, three-dimensional effect of this façade represents a reaction to this highly-specific trackside context.

Vienna TWENTYTWO
Austria

The VIENNA TWENTYTWO constitutes an adequate urban intervention to scale at its given location in Vienna’s northern periphery. The area’s composition and structure include six buildings, two of which are highrises delimiting the complex on the site’s northern and southern margins.

The buildings accommodate living- and office spaces, a hotel, administration units, and public institutions, hence featuring a high degree of functional heterogeneity and variation.

The general aspect of the urban ensemble is characterized by a user-friendly space allocation
Diverse free spaces between the buildings form a varied and qualitative urban landscape composed of partly roofed promenades, terraces and green areas.

Sparkasse Bremen

Sparkasse Bremen
Germany

The new headquarter for the Sparkasse Bremen integrates discreet and easily into the situation of the crossing Universitätsallee and the motorway approach. As a solitary building it continues the open urban structure of the University environment. The building form is developed from the basic shape of a rectangle. Cut outs and voids create differentiated spaces for a high range of working possibilities.

Within the volumes private outdoor areas are created, enclosed by thefaçade they’re protected from street noise. The ground floor, which mainly houses the semi-public functions, is visually separated from the four office floors above. The transparent base directs the customers into the interior of the building and the green courtyard provides a high quality space to dwell.

ANTONIANUM Meran
Italy

The modern ensemble consists of three buildings, which are brought together in a harmonious and yet intriguing sense of equilibrium with the help of horizontal and vertical connecting elements at different levels. The resulting open-air pergolas are carried on into the building itself in the form of continuous balconies or terraces. This layering of horizontal elements and bands at various levels generates a dynamic appearance: The individual storeys can be clearly identified and this also helps to structure the various volumes.

Architecture and nature become one in the Antonianum through the creation of open, flowing spaces that overcome barriers. A further key role is played by intermediate spaces: Communal areas are created in order to promote intense cooperation. The home as a place of retreat but also of coming together.

Offshore Borkum
Germany

As part of the urban development of Borkum-Reede a series of compact and architecturally sophisticated residential units are being created in the northern part of the harbour for workers in the offshore sector.

The quarter, which includes personnel accommodation, retail space and high quality social areas, enjoys an exclusive location on the old naval harbour at the southern tip of the island and is making a key contribution to the revival of the area. The form, materiality and positioning of the design concept refer to the topographical characteristics of the location.
